I recently posted an opportunity with Sphere Festival in Kolkata, India. They have received submissions that do not fit the category, so they now have a password or waiver code for that category on the submission platform, such as filmfreeway. I posted the opportunity yesterday with a link to open up the mail client, which, it turns out, didn’t work in all browsers, my apologies. I have changed it to the email address I have for them. Please note: it is not an email address to submit to for free, it is a link to acquire a password from them to submit on the submission platform, such as filmfreeway, in the category of “personal messages or expressions” only. By sending an email you will have started the process, but you will not have submitted until you have used the password on the submission platform.
Many festivals I work with express frustration that they receive a large amount of submissions that do not match the type of festival and/or category. Although it can be easy to miss a detail, that is not what I am referring to. I have had filmmakers admit to me that they just submit to all the free festivals on a platform without reading the criteria. If a festival has to spend all of it’s time weeding out entries that do not match the type of festival they are organizing, they could charge a fee just to weed out non-careful entries on the idea that when people pay a fee, they choose more carefully.
Plus, if you carefully read the specifics, you will get less “rejections” in the long run.
