MediaWave International Film Festival 01/10/19
Special theme: RITUALS. The mystic word ‘ritual’ occured when thinking about the theme of our next Gathering. However, after going deeper into studying the expression, we figured out that it means much more to us: we have been instinctively using at Mediawaves for years what the ethnograpy defines as “temporary rituals”, the possible solutions of the society for crises accompanying the turning points of human life. Such rites are for instance the stag and hen party, the wedding procession and the wedding party itself which have created the pillars of our gathering for four years. There are rites going hand in hand with changes of the universe, the alternation of seasons. Mayday is the beignning of the spring festival to celebrate fertility, the fresh, green, colurful, the invigorating liberty of going out from dark rooms to the nature. Several traditions and rituals relate to this period of the year, among them the gipsies’ spring festival, the Ederlezi. Our Gathering is also held this time so we strongly want the different tastes of Mediawave in film, music, community programs and gastronomy to be flavoured with spices of this beautiful spring rite.
In archaic societies, the young people become full members of the community after going through the rite of passage. Let it be a suprise how we imagine such an initiation ceremony at our Gathering in the Fort Monostor, Komárom between 30 April and 4 May, 2019.

The national short film competition JUNGER FILM is the heart of FiSH. The partaking films have a maximum runtime of 30 minutes and the maximum age limit for the directors is set at 27 years. In the previous year, more than 400 young directors have submitted their short films to the annual competition. 30 to 40 of all submissions are then selected to be shown during the festival. What makes JUNGER FILM so special is the open and communicative atmosphere between filmmakers, the jury and the audience. Through said communication, FiSH becomes a “school of speaking about films”. After every screening the filmmakers are interviewed and after every film block the jury openly discusses the movies on stage, contrary to a lot of other festivals. This approach to film screening provides a direct path for criticism and praise between the directors, the actors and the audience.
